Project Overview:

The Challenge:
Stop water from penetrating into the building’s interior through cracks in the mortar joints of the exterior block wall.

The Alpha Weatherproofing Solution:
Adhesion testing using ASTM D 3359-02 Standard Test Methods for Measuring Adhesives by Tape Test, followed by the application of a flexible coating system to waterproof and provide an aesthetically pleasing exterior for the structure, as follows:

• Performed surface preparation tests using high pressure water
• Sika representative performed adhesion tests using ASTM D 3359-02
• Every crack was opened using the dry cut saw method to form a small working joint
• Cracks were then sealed with Sikaflex 1A, a single-component polyurethane elastomeric sealant
• All sealant joints were then hand-detailed with Sikagard 550W Elastocolor tint base to prevent the sealant from shadowing through the coating
• After detailing the base coat, the top coat was applied using Sikagard 550W Elastocolor that had been tinted white

The Result:
A leak-free structure with a 5-year Sika warranty.
