Ames Parking Facility Location: Lowell, MA

Project Overview:

The parking decks of the three-level Ames Parking Facility required repair and protection, as the original reinforcing was becoming exposed due to thin concrete cover in several places.  This busy facility serves the residential parking needs of an adjacent apartment complex, and supplemental parking for surrounding commercial and residential properties.

The Alpha Weatherproofing Solution:
Using small electric jackhammers, the Alpha Team removed the old concrete without damaging the reinforcing mesh.  They treated the mesh with anti-corrosion coating and poured concrete repair mortar at the prepared areas.

Nearly 5,000 LF of cracks in the concrete were routed and sealed, and a roof-deck expansion joint was replaced.

The team installed a durable vehicular traffic-bearing hybrid waterproofing system consisting of a 100 percent solids epoxy primer, a urethane basecoat, and a urethane wear coat into which silica sand was broadcast.

A final UV-stable urethane topcoat, seeded with silica sand, and back-rolled, completed the system.

Once the waterproofing system was successfully installed, each parking deck was line-striped.

To maintain safe, uninterrupted access for residents, the team completed the lower two levels by working a half-level at a time, using fencing and signage to safely and efficiently reroute traffic.
